This course is open to Phlebotomy Technician I professionals. This course was designed specifically for phlebotomists. Phlebotomists licensed in California may earn credit for it, but no credit will be granted to medical technologists or clinical laboratory scientists.

For the Blood Collection course, the measurable learning objectives are below.

By the end of the course the student will be able to:

  • Explain and demonstrate the proper use of universal precautions for infection control.
  • List, describe, and explain the purpose of the equipment and supplies needed to collect blood specimens by venipuncture.
  • List and describe evacuated tube system (ETS) and syringe system components, explain how each system works, and tell how to determine which system and components to use.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the types of blood collection additives, identify and describe how each works.
  • Describe ETS tube stopper color coding used to identify the presence or absence of an additive, connect with laboratory procedures, and list the order of draw.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of each venipuncture step and define associated terminology.
  • Describe how to perform a venipuncture using ETS, syringe, or butterfly, list required patient and specimen identification information, describe how to handle patient ID discrepancies, and state the acceptable reasons for inability to collect a specimen.
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of the preanalytical variables that influence laboratory test results and related test impacts.
  • Discuss problem areas associated with site selection and explain what to do.
  • Describe how to handle patient complications, address procedural error risks, and specimen quality concerns, and analyze reasons for failure to draw blood.
  • Understand how to identify and select the appropriate puncture device and equipment and explain all procedural steps required to positively identify the patient and safely perform puncture.
  • Discuss how to monitor for possible complications of vascular access and skin puncture.

Product Requirements

Course Completion:

  • Students must be present on campus throughout the full course to receive Certificate of Completion and CEs. If there is an absence the student will be rescheduled for another class to complete the full class time. The class must be completed within one year.
  • Practical testing on each other is an optional courtesy we extend to all RNs on the last day of class that includes live sticks. A proxy may be brought in your place if you cannot have a live stick performed on you for any reason.
  • Upon successful completion of this course, Genesis students are welcome back to refresh their live stick skills for one year at no cost. You must call ahead to coordinate scheduling.

Please note:

  • Course Materials: Students receive the course materials on-site.
  • Equipment Box: Students are loaned an equipment box in class and are responsible for the equipment. There is a $20 charge for lost or damaged equipment.
  • Medical release: A medical release from your physician is required if you are pregnant or have any other medical condition that would prevent you from participating in the live testing portion of this course.
  • Daily Expectations: The day begins at 8:00 a.m. sharp and will run for up to 9 hours. Any time missed due to lateness must be made up at the end of class to prevent your certified status at a State level being delayed, or if a student misses a significant amount of class time he or she will be rescheduled.
  • GMEC believes that our daily curriculum and break/lunch structure fosters an enriched academic learning environment to effectively retain the knowledge conveyed during those days. We strive to maintain a positive atmosphere that is encouraged by the welcome and constructive contributions of our students and highly qualified instructors.
  • To ensure students feel comfortable during testing, safety issues and possible complications are covered prior to examination. A proxy may be brought in your place if the student cannot have a live stick performed for whatever reason.
  • Students must wear closed-toed shoes or they will not be allowed in class.
  • Our primary goal is to provide the highest quality of instruction and education to each of our students, and to help ensure the safety of their future patients.

STUDENT'S RIGHT TO CANCEL:  CANCELLATION, WITHDRAWAL, AND REFUND POLICY:

The student has the right to cancel the enrollment agreement and obtain a refund of charges paid if notice of cancellation is made up to 72 hours prior to the start date. Refund requests will be honored when made prior to 72 hours of the course start time minus any non-refundable charge. The school will refund any money paid, less non-refundable fees within 15 days after the notice is received.  Cancellation occurs when the student notifies the administration in writing with a request to cancel from the school by email to admin@genesismec.com. After the class has started, if the student chooses to leave the course this is a withdrawal.  Withdrawal occurs when the student notifies the administration in writing with a request to withdraw from the school by email to admin@genesismec.com.  For courses longer than 12 hours or taught over more than one class day, students withdrawing on or before hour 12 or before the second class day, shall be granted either a 50% refund (minus a $20 admin fee) of tuition charges, or for students wishing to reschedule the course at a later date, a credit for all charges paid. GMEC will honor the credit for a period not to exceed 12 months. Students who withdraw from courses shorter than 12 instructional hours or courses taught within a single class day, are not eligible for a refund of charges paid. For withdrawal, any textbooks, equipment or supplies must be returned in unused condition to receive a refund.

If the student has received federal student financial aid funds, the student is entitled to a refund of moneys not paid from federal student financial aid program funds.
