The Medical Coding program focuses on learning coding conventions and guidelines for the ICD-10-CM, CPT, and Level II HCPCS medical code sets and then applying the rules to accurately assign codes for diagnoses and services. Students will become familiar with the history of medical coding and the applications for its use in health care today. Emphasis will be placed on coding guidelines and the official rules established for the use of the standard code sets, primarily in outpatient settings, such as physician office, hospital, emergency room, and operating room. This program also introduces students to rules for inpatient coding, the code set necessary for inpatient procedure coding (ICD-10-PCS), and prepares students to further their coding education in preparation for certification.

Prepare for your Certified Professional Coder Apprentice (CPC-A) exam administered by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).

Our online Medical Coding program can help you prepare for the certification exam. Upon graduating the Medical Coding program you will receive your Genesis Medical College Certificate of Completion attesting to your accomplishment. GMC’s Medical Coding program together with our Medical Billing program will help prepare you to take the Certified Professional Coder Apprentice (CPC-A) exam, administered by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). Certification exams are administered by independent third parties. You are not required to take a certification exam, however, taking this additional step will help you market yourself to potential employers and validate your Medical Coding knowledge.

Your CPC-A exam fees are included in your tuition-up to a $325 value.

  • Practice coding from all systems in the ICD-10-CM and sections of the CPT codebooks.
  • Identify anatomy necessary for coding the body systems in the ICD-10-CM codebook.
  • Identify procedure terms necessary for coding the services found in the CPT codebook.
  • Apply coding methods learned to the Level II National (HCPCS) codebook.
  • Identify the types of codes found in the Level II National codebook and recognize when they should be applied.
  • Examine the ICD-10-PCS coding system.
  • Discuss the differences between the ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding systems and when each codebook should be used.
