Venipuncture for Technologists covers all topics required by the California State Department of Public Health to meet the requirements for venipuncture certification. The technologist is introduced to the basic skills necessary to safely perform venipuncture for contrast x-rays and to help ensure patient safety. This course is also a refresher for certified technologists.
This is an 8-hour course approved by ASRT to provide 7.5 Category “A” Credits.
ASRT Approved Category “A” Credit
This course has been approved by the American Society of Radiologic Technologist (ASRT) for 7.5 Category “A” Credits and meets the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) criteria for Category “A” continuing education credit.
This course meets CDPH-RHB acceptance criteria for continuing education credits required to renew certificates and permits in radiologic technology.

- Anatomy and physiology of venipuncture sites
- Venipuncture instruments, intravenous solutions, and related equipment
- Puncture techniques
- Techniques of intravenous line establishment
- Hazards and complications of venipuncture
- Postpuncture care
- Composition and purpose of antianaphylaxis tray
- Practice on manikins - 10 venipunctures in classroom manikin or live
Prerequisite
This course is open to radiologic technologist students who are currently enrolled in a radiology program. Applicants must provider their current student status to apply. Verification of valid AHA CPR certification is required.
Contact Education Hours: 7.5 CH’s are available for qualified providers.
Instructional Model: This class is offered in classroom or hybrid format. Hybrid format includes online lectures, and classroom skills. ONLINE LECTURES: The online live or on-demand classes cover the lecture material and quizzes. LIVE SKILLS LABORATORY is live on campus as scheduled.
