Admissions Requirements & Process

The Vocational Nursing Program has a selective admissions process designed to ensure students are prepared for the academic and clinical rigor of nursing education. Applicants must complete all admission steps and submit required documentation by the posted deadlines to be considered for acceptance.

The Vocational Nursing (VN) program at Genesis Medical College is a comprehensive training program designed to prepare students for a career as a Licensed Vocational Nurse. Admission into the program is competitive, and prospective students should carefully follow all application steps. To begin the process, interested applicants should review the program details and then apply as outlined below.

How to Apply: Applicants must complete an official application for the VN program and submit all required documents by the stated deadlines. The application is online. Once the application and documents are submitted, applicants should wait for further instructions from the admissions team.

Directions on how to apply

  • Click the “START MY APPLICATION” button below.
  • Enter the information and upload required documents as requested.
  • Be sure to use the same email for both account creation and application.
  • Click “SUBMIT” to submit the application.
  • Candidates will have an opportunity to submit some documents and information later if needed.

Tip: Start your application early! Gathering documents and preparing for the entrance exam can take time. Submitting your application well before the deadline gives you a better chance to address any issues that might arise. Contact GMC when you have questions.

Before applying to the VN program, ensure the pre-requisites are met. These requirements are in place to make sure incoming students are prepared for the rigor of the program.

    • Educational Background: Must have an official High school diploma, GED, degree, or equivalent. Official transcripts will be required to be on file by the application deadline. Proof of completion will be required. Copies are accepted for the application, but proof must be provided before the program start date (If educated outside the U.S., provide translated and evaluated transcripts and proof of English proficiency.)
    • Entrance Exam (GMC Admissions Assessment): All applicants must take the GMC Admission Assessment (GMCA2). The 5-hour assessment includes Math, English (Vocabulary, Grammar, Reading Comprehension), Critical Thinking.
    • Alternate Entrance Exam: Applicants who have already taken the ATI TEAS exam (Test of Essential Academic Skills) or HESI A2 within the past 24 months may submit their scores for review. **Note:** TEAS and HESI A2 scores should meet equivalent benchmarks. The admissions committee will determine if the TEAS or HESI A2 score can substitute for the GMCA2.
    • English Proficiency: Because the program is taught in English, applicants must be comfortable with college-level English. If your prior education was not in English, you might be asked to demonstrate English proficiency through an exam or preparatory course.
    • Minimum Age: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age by the start of the program.
    • Technology: The vocational nursing program’s course materials are housed online, students must have a laptop and be sufficiently proficient with basic computer functions and have a computer that meets the technology requirements, found in the Academic Catalog.

Tip: Prepare for the GMCA2 exam in advance. Utilize study guides or preparatory courses to ensure you achieve your best score. Strong exam results not only fulfill minimum criteria but also improve your ranking among other applicants.

The Admissions Assessment is a 5-hour exam on Math, Critical Thinking, and English (Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension).

Take the Admissions Assessment: GMC A2 In Person On Campus Proctored Exam. Candidates must bring their own computer to campus.

GMCA2 In Person On Campus Proctored Exam – candidates will pay a $50 fee for the assessment.

Tip: If you have taken an admissions exam in the last 2 years you may submit the report from that exam. It must be validated as equivalent to waive the GMC A2 requirement.  Partial credit may be awarded.

When submitting your application, be sure to include all of the following documents. Incomplete applications may delay processing or disqualify you from admission consideration:

  • Completed Application Form: Fill out all sections of the Genesis Medical College VN Program application. Ensure that your personal information is accurate and up to date.
  • Application Fee:  Pay the non-refundable $50 application fee. This fee is included in the total program cost.
  • Government-Issued Photo ID: Provide a clear copy of a valid photo identification (e.g., driver’s license, state ID, or passport) for identity verification.
  • Proof of Education: Upload a copy of a high school diploma, GED certificate, or official transcripts from all colleges attended where credit was earned or graduated. If college credits or a degree have been earned, official college transcripts are required to be submitted (these may be used for transfer credit evaluation). During the application process, unofficial transcripts can be accepted, however, official transcripts must be received prior to the start date.
    • Transfer Credit Evaluation: Candidates need to check the box if transfer credit evaluation is desired. There may be a separate cost for transcript evaluation. Transfer coursework must have been completed within the previous 5 years. Grades must be 75% or better. Transfer credit will only be considered prior to acceptance into the program and not be considered after the program start date.
  • Entrance Exam Results: Candidates who complete the GMCA2 will have their score reports automatically included in their application. Applicants substituting a TEAS or HESI A2 score should upload the official score report from that exam.
  • Other Certifications (if applicable): If a candidate has relevant healthcare certifications include copies. Examples: Certified Nursing Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, Certified Phlebotomy Technician I, and Emergency Medical Technician National Registry; all others will be determined at the discretion of the Director of Vocational Nursing. A current Basic Life Support card from American Heart Association is required.
  • Work or Military Experience: For each work location, include a dated letter on company letterhead from employer(s) with the application. This letter must list your job title, duties, and dates of paid employment. Family-related care is excluded. All health-related work experience will be determined at the discretion of the Director of Vocational Nursing.
  • NOTE: Applicants who have a CNA certificate or applicants who have military medical experience can receive transfer credit or compensation.

Tip: Make copies of all documents for your records. Use a checklist to ensure nothing is missed. When submitting online, scan documents clearly. Keeping a personal file will help if any item needs to be re-submitted.

Meeting the minimum admissions requirements makes a candidate eligible for consideration, but admission is selective. Completed applications will be considered until the application deadline. The admissions committee reviews all qualified applications. The selection and ranking typically process is as follows.

  • Complete Application: Only applicants who have met all pre-requisites and submitted all required documents (as listed above) will move forward in the selection process. Applications that are incomplete or do not meet minimum standards will not be considered for admission.

  • Screening and Selection Rubric: Eligible applicants are primarily ranked through points awarded according to their prior education and work experience, and course or program completion, in addition to their performance on the entrance exam. Be thorough in submitted documents to be awarded the maximum points possible.

  • Additional Criteria: In addition, applicants must write a personal essay to earn points and must complete an interview. The essay must be handwritten and completed on campus. The interview is typically held through online meeting room.

  • Selection of Cohort: The program has a limited number of seats. Applicants are ordered by rank, and the top candidates are offered admission until all seats are filled. If a candidate is offered a seat, the candidate will receive a conditional acceptance letter outlining the next steps (see Post-Admission Requirements).

  • Alternate Candidates: Qualified applicants who were not initially admitted may be designated as alternates (see Alternate Policy below). Alternates may be called up to join the program if admitted students decline their offer or fail to meet post-admission requirements.

  • Financial Clearance Deadline: All candidates must be financially cleared by the Financial Clearance Deadline. This means completing payment in full or enrolling in a payment plan with signed financial documents with required documents and down payment. Candidates who are not cleared by this date will be dropped from the program.

Note: Meeting the minimum requirements (exam scores, prerequisites, documents) does not guarantee admission. Strive to exceed the minimum criteria to improve your chances. The admissions process is competitive, and it’s not unusual for more qualified candidates to apply than there are spots available.

Congratulations to those who are offered admission into the Vocational Nursing Program! Once a candidate has received conditional acceptance into the VN program, there are several important steps to complete before the candidate can officially start the program and retain admitted status. Admitted students (and alternates, as noted) must fulfill the following post-admission requirements:

Background Check: All admitted students must undergo a criminal background check. Genesis Medical College will provide instructions for completing the background check through an approved agency. A clear background (or issues approved by the administration) is necessary to participate in clinical rotations. Failure to pass the background check can result in forfeiture of your spot.

Drug Screening: Students are required to complete a 10-panel drug screen (or similar) at a designated laboratory. A clean drug test is mandatory. Any positive result for unauthorized substances may disqualify you from the program. It’s important to disclose any prescribed medications as instructed during the screening process.

Health Clearance: Admitted students must provide proof of required immunizations and health screenings. This typically includes a recent physical exam, TB test or chest X-ray clearance, and up-to-date vaccinations (such as Hepatitis B, MMR, Varicella, Tdap, and flu shot). You will receive a checklist of health requirements and the Physical Form to be completed by a healthcare provider.

Orientation: Orientation is held before classes begin and attendance is required.

Alternate Status Procedures: If a candidate has been offered an alternate spot (meaning the program is currently full, but the candidate is on an alternate list for an opening), the candidate should complete all the above admission steps as if admitted. Alternates must be ready to join the class on short notice if a space becomes available, even up to the first week of the term. If no space opens for an alternate, the alternate admission is withdrawn. Alternates who remain qualified may be given priority consideration for the next cohort, but they will need to reapply for that cycle.

The VN program has an alternate candidate policy when more qualified applicants exist than available spots. The alternate list is a way to fill seats if admitted students withdraw or fail to meet post-admission requirements. Key points include:

  • Notification of Alternate Status: Applicants who are placed on alternate status will be notified in their decision letter. Having alternate status means the alternate candidate mets the requirements but was not in the top group selected initially.
  • Rank Order: Alternate candidates are ranked by the admissions committee which maintains an internal rank based on the same criteria used for admission. If a position or seat opens, the next alternate candidate in line would be admitted.
  • Time Frame: Alternate status is generally active until the start date of the program for that cohort only. If a candidate is on the alternate list, the candidate could be called up to start the program up until the first week of classes. After the program start, the alternate list is dissolved.
  • Next Cohort Consideration: Alternate students who did not get a seat are encouraged to reapply for the next cohort. While GMC cannot guarantee admission in the next cycle, reapplying demonstrates persistence. The admissions team may consider previous the alternate status.

GMC does not offer financial aid through Title IV.

Payment plans must be agreed to in writing through signed financial agreements. Students are required to demonstrate their source of funding to meet the payment plan due dates. Payment plans require an ACH arrangement for payments. Late payments are grounds for dismissal from the program.

Students may choose to use their bank, 3rd party loan services, or other funding sources.

Scholarships are available for the vocational program.

There is a GMC scholarship, the AJH Scholarship. Up to $4,000 may be awarded through the AJH Scholarship.  The application process is online and separate from the Vocational Nursing program application. The scholarship is underdevelopment and more information will be posted later.  When available, applications will be reviewed and awarded by the Scholarship Committee which meets periodically throughout the year. Note that the AJH Scholarship cannot be combined with another GMC financial offer like a grant.

There are also external 3rd party scholarship like the Scholly Scholarship listed below. Students may use external 3rd party scholarships with the GMC Grant.

AJ Henrickson (under development)

Scholly Scholarships (Sallie Mae)

Applicants may qualify for a grant which must be used toward the Vocational Nursing program’s total program cost. The grant promotion has specific eligibility terms. The maximum grant is $5,000. If a grant is awarded, it is applied to the program tuition throughout the program duration. No funds are given directly to the student; the tuition payments are reduced.

Start your journey in healthcare with the support of a grant! Qualified applicants to our Vocational Nursing Program may receive up to a $5,000 tuition grant by meeting the following criteria:

Grant Eligibility Requirements

  1. Submit the Nursing Program Application
Complete and submit the full application by the required deadline.
  2. Secure Financial Resources
Provide evidence of full funding for tuition and fees (e.g. self-pay, private loans, scholarships, or payment plans).
  3. Meet Admissions Requirements
Satisfy all minimum academic and eligibility requirements for the Vocational Nursing Program.
  4. Be Accepted into the Program
Receive an official acceptance letter into the program
  5. Sign off on enrollment and financial documents
  6. Maintain Good Standing (For Continued Eligibility)
Remain in good academic standing and comply with all institutional policies, academic requirements, and program procedures throughout the program. Loss of Grant is retroactive to the beginning of the program.

Note: The available funds for the grant are limited and are offered first to students who complete their application ahead of the application deadline. The grant will be offered until the funds are depleted for this cohort.

The grant is applied toward tuition only and is credited after enrollment is confirmed. Continued eligibility is subject to the student’s academic standing, policy compliance, and signed enrollment and financial documents. Students who violate eligibility may be subject to loss of the grant and be retroactively responsible for regular tuition rates. Students do not directly receive funds.

FAQ’s For the Grant Oppurtunity:

Q: What does the Grant Application Priority Deadline mean?

A: It’s an early deadline for students who want the best chance at receiving the grant. Applicants who meet all requirements by this date receive first consideration for funding. Applications submitted after this date may still be eligible — but only if funds remain available.

Q: Why is the Financial Clearance Deadline after the Decision Notification Date?

A: Students need to know they’re accepted before finalizing tuition funding. The Financial Clearance Deadline gives admitted students time to confirm how they’ll pay — via scholarships, loans, or payment plans — before the program starts.

Q: Can I still get the grant if I apply after the priority deadline?

A: Possibly. Late applicants will be considered only if grant funds remain available after the priority deadline pool is reviewed.

Q: What is the Promissory Note?

A: The promissory note is a formal agreement outlining the terms of the grant. All recipients must sign it before funds are applied to their tuition. It ensures students understand their responsibilities and the conditions for continued eligibility.

Q: What happens if I fall behind on tuition payments?

A: Students who do not stay current with financial obligations risk being placed on hold, withdrawn from classes, or dismissed from the program entirely. Timely payments are essential to maintaining enrollment and grant eligibility.
